Being in the limelight one hundred percent of the time sounds exhausting. Always having to be on your best behavior and put on a happy face for the endless line of cameras can get old real fast. So when starstruck fans approach celebrities in public, they often expect to get a selfie next to their idol… but not every celebrity is willing to play that game. These celebrities are very likely to refuse a fan photo!

The Wolf of Wall Street star is a weird one, and we mean that endearingly. When wild fans approach him for autographs or selfies, he reportedly hands them wacky business cards that read “I just met Jonah Hill. It was a total let down.” We love a good sense of humor.

The Hunger Games lead is known for being laid back and obsessed with pizza, but that doesn’t mean she wants to take selfies with fans 24/7. “It is hard because you don’t want to feel rude, because they’re people, but at the same time, I have to defend my life and my mental wellness.”

Christopher Polk / Getty Images

The Avatar star’s reason for refusing a photo is more wholesome than bratty. She and her husband, Marco Perego-Saldana, realized aggressive photo ops affected their boys. “They’re still at that tender age where they don’t understand why a stranger is coming over and touching their mother,” she explained to People in 2019.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have dealt with a lot of media pressure and harassment over the years, so it’s not surprising that Prince Harry would rather skip the Instagram selfies. In his opinion “selfies are bad.”

Though the handsome pop star may love taking his own selfies, posing for selfies with fans is no longer on the table. “People won’t even say hi to me or recognize me as a human. I feel like a zoo animal, and I wanna be able to keep my sanity.”

Frances tells fans she’s “retired from that part of the business” when they ask for a selfie. Instead, she’d rather talk. “I’m not an actor because I want my picture taken. I’m an actor because I want to be part of the human exchange.”

Frances McDormand’s philosophy actually inspired the A Quiet Place star to adopt the same one! “Social media has changed the landscape, so an encounter with you is valued more as a social-media currency than a genuine interaction,” Blunt said.

While he’s a brilliant oddball onscreen, Jim Carrey is much more subdued and serious in reality. Understandably, he’s given up the act of trying to please the world. “I’m not unkind to people, but I would much prefer saying hello and ‘who are you’ and ‘what are you doing today’ to giving a selfie.”

AaronRapoport / Corbis / Getty Images

He’s not exactly as charming and quirky as Peter Parker, and that became apparent in a viral YouTube video showing Tobey literally slapping a camera out of a fan’s hand when he approached him for a photo. Just leave Tobey alone; it’s better for everyone that way.

That’s right, Hermione Granger would rather have a genuine conversation. “If someone takes a photograph of me and posts it, within two seconds they’ve created a marker of exactly where I am within 10 meters,” she told Vanity Fair. Touché.

The Grammy winner’s level of fame sometimes gets complicated in regards to his social anxiety. “What instantly cuts me off is that you’re having a moment with them which is so genuine and so nice and then at the end they ask for a picture.”

Similar to how Emma Watson feels, Maisie would rather have a nice chat with Game of Thrones superfans than pose for a staged photo. “I still don’t feel like I owe anyone anything. If I don’t want a picture one day, I don’t have a problem saying no…” she told Nylon.

While the Gladiator star may come off as a Tough Guy™, his reasoning for refusing selfies with fans relates to his dear children. “I don’t want to steal time from my children,” he told Larry King in 2015. But if you spot him alone out in the wild, you might get lucky!

Whether you know him as Parks and Recreation‘s resident puppy dog Andy Dwyer, or Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Star‑Lord, he might not take a selfie with you. “I just don’t take pictures with people. Because that’s not about enjoying the moment; it’s about stealing the moment to brag about later,” he stated.

The Star Wars talent is a newcomer in terms of mainstream fame, and she does whatever she can to preserve her own mental health, including staying off social media and refusing selfies with fans. “I don’t want everyone to immediately know where I am,” she explained.

An unsettling 2016 incident involving a “fan” prompted the funny lady to stop taking selfies. “This guy in front of his family just ran up next to me scared the s– out of me. Put a camera in my face. I asked him to stop and he said, ‘No, it’s America and we paid for you.’”

Part of the English sweetheart’s charm is her unapologetic bluntness! She apparently despises selfies in general. “I wouldn’t dream of taking a selfie with anyone. God almighty. That’s to take narcissism to its unspeakable extremes,” the Love Actually star told the Belfast Telegraph in 2014.

The sexy, snarky vampire isn’t afraid to be a little selfish sometimes, which is a good thing! He once told a Paris crowd in 2015 that selfies were a no-go for the day. “Everybody, listen, I love you guys. I’m not taking a single photo today; it’s my day…”

Of course, there are a lot of good reasons not to take selfies. Awkward photos lead to some interesting conversations with the PR team. These celebrities are re-thinking their selfie policies.
